What is assisted living?

The Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) defines an assisted living residence as a special combination of housing, personalized supportive services and health care designed to meet the needs — both scheduled and unscheduled — of those seniors who need help with activities of daily living (ADL), such as bathing, dressing, eating and monitoring medications.
Assisted living is generally for those seniors who find it difficult or unsafe to manage on their own but whom do not need the intensive, 24-hour complex medical services of traditional long-term care.
Through the years, we have found that our residents have benefitted most from assurance of three balanced meals daily, supervision of medication, health monitoring, a safe secure environment, and social interaction.

What is an assisted living facility?

According to the Alabama Department of Public Health, “Assisted Living Facility” means an individual, individuals, corporation, partnership, limited partnership, limited liability company or any other entity that provides, or offers to provide, residence and personal care to two or more individuals who are in need of assistance with activities of daily living.

Individuals who provide residential and personal care services solely to persons to whom they are personally related, shall not be deemed to be an assisted living facility. “Personally related” means that the person receiving the residential and personal care services is the spouse, parent, sibling, adult child, adult grandchild, grandparent, great-grandparent, adult niece, adult nephew, aunt, uncle or first cousin of the person providing such services, or stands in that relation to the current spouse of the person
providing the services.

There are unlicensed facilities operating illegally across the state of Alabama. They are attractive due to their deceptive low cost, however, their residents are at high risk, they are being cared for often in substandard conditions, and clearly violating present law. Laws and regulations are designed to help ensure the safety and well-being of our residents and reassure families that their loved one is properly cared for.

Will I be safe?

Attendants are staffed 24 hours per day. Hamilton Sunset is a licensed assisted living facility and a member of the Alabama Assisted Living Association. A fire detection system is active throughout resident suites and the entire facility. Each room is protected by a sprinkler system. An emergency call system is provided in each suite and bathroom to summon help if needed. We are routinely inspected by the State Department of Public Health.

Can I afford it?

Hamilton Sunset pricing is certainly reasonable and affordable for many senior adults. If you compare the cost of home maintenance, grocery bills, utilities, having someone cook and clean for you, lawn care, insurance, taxes, house upkeep, repair problems, the threat of intruders..........there is no question, Hamilton Sunset is a bargain!

Medicaid or Medicare is not available in Alabama for assisted living care. However, there are significant VA benefits for qualifying veterans and/or spouses. Most long term care insurance plans have provisions for assisted living services as well. There may be tax benefits available for qualifying individuals, as well.

Effective February 1, 2008, our rate will be $1975.00 per month. This monthly fee includes a private room, private bath, bath and bed linen, laundry of linen, free in-room television cable access, attendant care, three balanced meals per day, access to scheduled snacks, activities and resident functions, and in-room housekeeping.

There are no hidden or surprise charges at Hamilton Sunset. Usually, our resident’s other facility related costs are their personal medication (which continues to be covered by personal insurance), beauty shop charges and personal laundry costs of $5.00 per load. This includes washing, drying, and return of clothing to resident’s room. Once a room is reserved, a daily pro rated rate begins. Residents are billed at the first of the month for the current month. We request a seven day notice before the room is vacated and daily pro rated charges are assessed until personal items/furniture are removed. Residents vacating the room within a month are reimbursed for days not used.

Our billing, as well as our service and care policies, are based upon treating our residents and families as we would want to be treated.
